Module 1: Short Course in Wound Care

Course overview:  This course is developed for all Healthcare Workers who are involved in the assessment, treatment and ongoing management of wounds. The course will support clinical decision making in relation to the assessment and management of wounds, in line with individual professional competence.This course is accredited with 30 CPD points. from the HPCSA and presented by the Foundation for Professional Development in partnership with Eloquent Learning Health.Course Facilitator is Liezl Naude, Founder of Eloquent Learning Health & Advanced Wound Care Practitioner. She is the founding member & past president of WHASA; International key opinion leader and clinical educator since 2005.

Module 2: Diabetic Foot Management in Practice

Prerequisites: Eloquent Module 1: Wound Management Made Practical.

Course overview: 

Module 2 is a 2-day contact session focusing on the holistic management of the diabetic foot.  The course follows both national and international guidelines on the management of the diabetic foot.  Learners have the opportunity to meet members of the Multi-disciplinary team and discuss each team members role in the treatment of a patient with diabetes.  As an advanced course, learners are able to learn and hone new skills enabling them to perform a vascular and neuropathic evaluation.  Practical sessions include:

  • Vascular & Neurological Assessment
  • Foot & Skin Assessment
  • Callus debridement
  • Offloading & redistributing pressure

At the end of the module learners will be able to develop an individualized diabetic foot ulcer management plan that incorporates a holistic approach towards the patient’s overall wellbeing.  This module also allows the learner to engage with new and advanced technologies impacting healing in the diabetic foot.  Learners are required to do a 4-hour practical session as part of the module at an accredited Wound Care Centre.

Module 3: Managing the Lower Limb in Practice

Practical hours: 4 hours
Prerequisites: Eloquent Module 1: Wound Management Made Practical.
CPD points: 16
Course overview: 

This module is a 2-day contact session focusing on the underlying aetiology of lower limb ulcers and how to manage these patients holistically.  Learners will be able to align theory with practice and understand the physiology involved with lower limb ulcers.  Practical skills sessions include:

  • Performing an ABPI and vascular assessment
  • Leg measurements
  • Compression stocking application
  • Compression bandage application

At the end of the module learners will be able to differentiate between the different types of leg ulcers.  Learners will also be skilled in applying short and long stretch compression bandages.  Learners are required to do a 4-hour practical session as part of the module at an accredited Wound Care Centre.

Module 4: Managing Pressure Injuries, Pressure Ulcers and Complicated Wounds

Practical hours: 4 hours
Prerequisites: Eloquent Module 1: Wound Management Made Practical.
CPD points: 16
Course overview: 

This module is a 2-day contact session focusing on the underlying aetiology of Pressure injuries and Pressure Ulcers and how to manage these patients holistically.  Learners will be able to align theory with practice and understand the Anatomy and Physiology involved with Pressure Ulcers.  International Pressure Injury guidelines are implemented and demonstrated in practice.  Practical skills sessions include:

  • Applying Negative Wound Pressure Therapy
  • Utilizing off-loading and pressure redistribution devices
  • Using aids in lifting and transferring patients

At the end of the module learners will be able to differentiate between the different types of Pressure injuries, MASD and skin tears.  Learners will also be able to understand the application of Negative Wound Pressure therapy in wound care.  Learners are required to do a 4-hour practical session as part of the module at an accredited Wound Care Centre.

Practical Product Application Workshop

Practical hours: None
Prerequisites: None
CPD points: TBC
Course overview: 

This module is a 1-day contact session focussing on practical product application and can be done as a refresher or stand-alone module on wound care related products in South Africa. Learners will be able to fresh up on their product knowledge and also learn tricks of the trade when it comes to dressing difficult wounds and wound sites. Practical skills sessions include:

  • Current product classification according to international guidelines
  • Products available in South Africa
  • Techniques and tricks of the trade when applying wound dressings
  • Different bandage types and how to apply in practice

At the end of the module learners will be able to differentiate between the different dressing classifications and when and where to apply the different products according to best practice principles. Learners will be able to acquire skills in cutting and application of different wound care dressings. Learners will also be able to differentiate between the different bandage types and when and where to apply them.
